Every interview no matter how small is a chance to glimpse what matters to a person. It’s true that not everyone does well in front of the camera, but I like to approach each individual as if they have a poet inside them waiting to express their genius. An academic must find simpler yet true-in-spirit words to represent their research. A young idealist searches for the specifics in their experience. A confident outdoorsman must open up his most vulnerable thoughts. Every interview is its own dance.

Each edited moment then becomes part of the constellation of meaning that other people can learn from or respond to. Of course I want audiences to connect with the characters they meet on screen. But I love it when the characters connect with the beauty of their own thoughts. It’s not every day that we get to elevate our best thinking or our deepest thoughts for others to experience.
